Not sure if I'm pregnant.
by Amber
(Oklahoma City)
I am having some sharp pains going through my stomach every now and then. I'm not sure if that's because I'm pregnant or something else, I have been tired for no apparent reason even if I did get the normal amount of sleep. Now Im not having morning sickness but am feeling dizzy sometimes: could this mean I am for sure pregnant?
Reply from Pregnancy Information Guide:
Amber, you need to check this out with your doctor or health professional right away. The pains and dizziness are uncommon in a normal early pregnancy, (though not completely unknown) but they could mean you have an ectopic pregnancy, which can be a serious life threatener if you don't get it seen to right away. Please don't delay! Hopefully all is normal but you definitely do need to see a doctor to make sure.
(I would have replied to you privately but your email address wasn't included, so I hope you see this.)
Take care and very best wishes - H

Could I be pregnant?
by Jennifer
(Nova scotia)
Hi.
I'm 24 years old and trying to get pregnant. Back in April I was 2 weeks late for my period so I took a test and it was positive! So I went to the doctor and had a urine and blood test: both negative!! But I feel very pregnant! I'm not having regular periods, my stomach is puffed out and rounded, I get very dizzy and light headed and I'm tired all the time! We've done test after test and am currently waiting for an ultrasound. I was just wondering what the chances of me being pregnant are? Is it even possible for me to be pregnant? And if not what's wrong with me? Thanks 'hopefully mom to b'

Hi Jennifer. This must be a trying time for you, wondering what's going on.
There are a couple of possible answers here:
1) Some women get several negative test results and then finally get a positive, several weeks into their pregnancy. This is pretty unusual, since tests are good these days, but it can happen. You don't say how many weeks along you think you might be, but if in doubt, go back to the doctor and ask for a palpation and even a pelvic exam to make sure. (If you decide to try another home test first, make sure it's the first wee of the day, mid-stream, and try a different brand from before.)
2) If you are really wanting to be pregnant, it's not unusual for your body to throw up some very convincing signs, even when you're not.
3) Your hormonal cycle may be disturbed, especially if you've been on depo or a similar contraceptive, or you've had an early miscarriage, and this can lead to pregnancy-like symptoms too. Your doctor should be able to help you with a full health examination and some good advice.
4) There is a rare condition called Pseudocyesis, which is like a phantom pregnancy. Try putting it into Google if you want to know more about it. Unlikely but you never know.
I do hope you find the right answer soon. Even if you're not pregnant, though, if you want a baby, then my suggestion would be to get yourself back to being as healthy as you possibly can (see our Healthy Pregnancy Tips page: http://www.pregnancy-information-guide.com/healthy-pregnancy-tips.html) and let any hormonal disturbances die down before trying again. Relax (see http://www.pregnancy-information-guide.com/relaxation-in-pregnancy.html), take lots of rest and pamper yourself too!
Good luck! Hilary

Am I pregnant?
by T
I had a light period on my expected date last month. For me light is not normal: I'm usually heavy and last from 7 to 9 days. In the same month i started to bleed again very heavily and the first day it was very brown. I bled for days that time. So twice in one month. Im pretty regular with my periods, always have been, and now this month nothing? My breasts are swollen and tender with a heavy feeling. I feel sick off and on through out the day. I have taken a test once a week all month long: could I be pregnant? When I had my second what I thought was a period last month I went to the doctor's and had everything done to make sure I was ok. I got a clean bill of health and they said if I was pregnant it was not showing on any tests yet. Can this happen? Could i be pregnant? I missed my period 17 days ago and still no positive tests at home?
